Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
How long does a Yurt last?
A:
With regular minimal maintenance to the exterior, the wood frame of our Yurts can last a lifetime. Also our Heavy Duty Top Cover has a 15 year warranty, but may last much longer.
Q:
How secure will our Yurt be?
A:
With the continuous Lattice Wall spanning from one side of the door frame to the other and then through the window openings, the only way to enter is through the doorway.
All our solid doors come with a high quality residential lockset which carries a lifetime warranty. Window doors come fitted with Acrylic Windows that do not shatter like glass.
Q:
Who installs the Yurt and how long does it take?
A:
We find that our Yurts are often installed by the owners themselves. With the clear and concise manual, assembly is straight forward. Other customers have chosen to use a professional builder who can work along side their local councils to meet all the building requirements set by their local council. The time needed to install our Yurts will vary depending on your site, number of people building and which options you have chosen for your Yurt. A smaller Yurt is set up in a few hours, while a large Yurt may take a weekend to install.
Q:
I love cooking, what kind of Kitchen can I use in my Yurt?
A:
Kitchen units can be added in a very creative and economical way. There are many options and prices, so we recommend that you see your local building suppliers. Gas cooking is conventional, affordable and easy to use. A small gas tank in the Kitchen cupboard would be enough for your Gas Hob.
NOTE: Because of safety issues a large vertical gas tank cannot be attached to your Yurt wall.
Q:
How do we cool our Yurt?
A:
The openable Dome Skylight and Windows allow fresh air to be pulled into your Yurt to aid in natural convection cooling. A fan can also be installed to increase airflow and circulation. People in tropical areas who need maximum airflow may want to install our Tropical Cupola. With the use of Screen Doors additional ventilation is gained while keeping the Mozzies outdoors.
Q:
How do we heat our Yurt?
A:
Most conventional methods of heating will work in our Yurts. When using a small Wood Burning stove we recommend venting it through the sidewall of the Yurt rather than going through the roof. There are many benefits to venting through the wall, which include easy access to the chimney for regular cleaning, having the chimney away from the Yurts Vinyl Top Cover (to minimize the soot that falls onto the roof.
Our Yurts come with clear instructions on how to vent the Woodburner. It is important to pick a Woodburner or heater that is the right size for your Yurt. Customers with lots of windows in cold areas can increase heat retention by using their Insulated Window Covers. With underfloor insulation approved by your local council your Yurt will be comfy and cozy during the winter months.
Q:
How do I install plumbing ands electricity in my Yurt?
A:
Plumbing and electricity can easily be brought up through the floor of the Yurt and then installed in any Interior walls you may wish to build. If your site has plumbing and septic hookups you can use standard fixtures. In some remote areas or for sustainable living, people often use composting toilets and alternative gray water systems. Electrical outlets can be flush mounted into the floor of the Yurt or on short support posts around the perimeter of the wall. Please check this with your local electrician.
If you have built partition walls, electrical wiring can easily be run into these walls, where outlets and switches can be mounted. We recommend having a local professional install the electrical wiring.
As alternatives to conventional methods install Photovoltaic (Solar) Systems or Propane Systems (lights, refrigeration, heating, cooking stoves etc).
Q:
How do I add lighting?
A:
Almost any lighting can be used in your Yurt. Customers have installed Track Lighting on the rafters, Overhead lights from the Center Ring, they have used Floor or Table Lamps and Propane Lights among other things. Many prefer the safety of using Low Voltage Lighting in their Yurts.
Q:
What is the floor of the Yurt made of?
A:
Foundation and floors are not included in the price of the Yurt. Most councils require that you build your floor from Tanalised Plywood on a Pole Foundation. You can purchase from Yurt NZ the architectural (foundation and Joist) plans for all six sizes of Yurts. These plans have been designed to meet with the high risk wind and earthquake conditions of Wellington.
Q:
Can I add exterior decking?
A:
We advise our customers to build an exterior deck, which is freestanding from the platform.
Q:
Can I build interior walls to create Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom spaces?
A:
Interior partition walls can be added to provide separate bathrooms, bedrooms or kitchen areas. The partition walls should be freestanding and not rely on the Yurt, and can be connected to the roof rafters of the Yurt, but the interior walls should definitely be anchored to the floor.
Q:
How do I add a bathroom?
A:
Many people with larger Yurts choose to frame out an interior bathroom rather than attaching an exterior bathhouse. Your builder will be able to have the plumbing brought through the floor of your Yurt into the bathroom.
You can easily vent your bathroom through the floor or through the wall of the Yurt using a flashing kit. Proper ventilation will reduce the moisture inside the Yurt and prevent condensation.
Q:
Can my Yurt have a loft?
A:
Lofts are an excellent addition to your Yurt. Your loft should be a freestanding structure built into the Yurt after it is erected, and not attached to the roof rafters of the Yurt. They create private space below which can be used for bathrooms, bedrooms, even a stunning entrance to your living space.
